San Sebastián – the elegance of the bay and the flavour of pintxos
Some cities take your breath away at first sight, and then some cities stay with you forever. San Sebastián (Basque: Donostia) belongs to both categories. Nestled on the Bay of Biscay, in the heart of the Basque Country, this city has a special grace – a blend of refinement and simplicity that makes it utterly irresistible.
La Concha Bay – the city’s heart and symbol
The image that defines San Sebastián is undoubtedly La Concha Bay, with its beach often ranked among the most beautiful urban beaches in the world. Shaped like a perfect shell, it’s the emblem of the city: a place where locals and visitors alike gather for sunset walks or swims in its shimmering green-blue waters. Just steps away, Ondarreta Beach and Zurriola Beach complete the picture – the first quieter, the second favoured by surfers and anyone who thrives on the energy of the waves. Whether admired from the promenade, elegant terraces, or the summit of Monte Igueldo, the view is instantly captivating.

Old Town – the city’s pulse
The true heart of San Sebastián beats in the Old Town (Parte Vieja). Its narrow, bustling streets are a paradise for food lovers. Here you enter the world of pintxos – the Basque take on tapas, little culinary masterpieces displayed like edible jewels. The atmosphere is vibrant, with locals and travellers alike sharing the same ritual: a drink, a pintxo, a conversation… and then on to the next bar.

Gastronomy – the crown jewel
San Sebastián is Spain’s culinary capital and one of the world’s most celebrated gastronomic destinations. From traditional bars to Michelin-starred restaurants, every meal here feels like an experience.
This is where the now-famous Basque cheesecake was born. Baked at a high temperature, with a soft, creamy centre, it has become one of the world’s most beloved desserts – reinterpreted by chefs everywhere, yet never quite equalled. Tasting the original, in a small Donostia bakery or bar, remains an unforgettable experience.
Equally irresistible are the seafood dishes, prepared with simplicity, allowing the pure flavour of the sea to shine. For a truly memorable meal, the restaurants along 31 de Agosto Street or near the port offer a feast for the senses.

31 de Agosto Street is the only one that survived the great fire of 1813, when British and Portuguese troops, in their effort to liberate the city from Napoleonic occupation, set almost the entire town ablaze. Its name honours that tragic day – 31 August – and the resilience of the townspeople who rebuilt their city from the ashes.

Culture and elegance
San Sebastián is about much more than food and beaches. The city radiates aristocratic elegance, reflected in its Belle Époque architecture, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, and the grand Hotel María Cristina – a symbol of the International Film Festival that each autumn brings stars from across the globe.
Nature and views
Beyond the lively centre, Monte Urgull rewards you with sweeping views of La Concha Bay. At the summit, the monumental statue of Christ looks out over the city, while historic fortifications add to the sense of timelessness. On the opposite side, Monte Igueldo offers a softer, more romantic perspective of both the sea and the city.

Why fall in love with San Sebastián?
Because in a single day you can move from an elegant stroll along the promenade to a vibrant evening in the Old Town, from the calm of a panoramic view to the intensity of pintxos and the sweetness of a Basque cheesecake. San Sebastián is a city that manages to be refined and welcoming at once – always surprising, always unforgettable.
