Oviedo – the city where history and elegance meet under the Asturian rain

··2 min citire

If Gijón is Asturias’ maritime heart, Oviedo is its noble soul. The region’s capital doesn’t welcome you with beaches or waves, but with Gothic towers, elegant squares, and a unique calm, broken only by the hurried steps of locals and the soft patter of rain on umbrellas.

The first thing you notice here is order. Streets are clean, buildings immaculate, and shop windows tastefully arranged. Oviedo feels like a city that carries its past with dignity – understated yet refined in its beauty.

The Cathedral of San Salvador dominates the historic centre with its imposing Gothic façade. Inside lies the Cámara Santa, a UNESCO World Heritage site housing precious relics, visited by pilgrims for centuries. You don’t need to be religious to feel the emotion here – just step inside and let the serenity wash over you.

A few streets away, Plaza del Fontán shows Oviedo’s warmer side. The square is surrounded by colourful buildings, and on market days it fills with stalls offering local products: cheeses, cider, cured meats, and flowers.

Speaking of cider, in Oviedo it is served with the same tradition that defines all of Asturias – poured from above into a tilted glass so the drink can aerate. The restaurants and cider houses along Calle Gascona are the perfect place to experience this. You’ll hear the cider splashing into glasses, laughter, and soft conversations – this is the heartbeat of the city’s gastronomic life.

Another detail that captivated me in Oviedo is its sculptures. On every corner, a statue seems to greet you: Woody Allen gazing absentmindedly at the street, La Regenta in front of the cathedral, mysterious figures you stumble upon unexpectedly.

For a peaceful stroll, San Francisco Park is the perfect refuge. Surrounded by elegant streets, it’s a place where peacocks show off their plumage along shaded paths and benches.

Oviedo isn’t a big city, but it’s full of stories. You can see it in a day, but you won’t forget it easily. It’s a place to sip cider, listen to the rain, and watch the past and present meet in a subtle, graceful dance.
